Title and artwork
With the title and artwork for Fijación Oral Vol. 1, Shakira drew inspiration from psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. She also noted of the title's significance, "I've always felt that I've been a very oral person. It's my biggest source of pleasure." On the cover of the album, Shakira holds a baby in her arms, which alludes to Freud's theory that infants begin discovering the world through their mouths during the oral stage of psychosexual development.
Music
Fijación Oral Vol. 1 is primarily a Latin pop album. According to Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic, the record "straddles the line between traditional Latin pop and the sexy, splashy dance-pop and bombastic adult contemporary pop that made Laundry Service a big hit in the U.S." "La Tortura", which features Spanish singer/songwriter Alejandro Sanz, contains influences of Colombian cumbia music, dancehall, and electronica. "Obtener un Sí" is a bossa nova song with elements of cha-cha-chá, and includes orchestral arrangements in the background. "Escondite Inglés" displays new-wave influences, while "Las de la Intición" delves into synth-pop. Speaking about Shakira's vocal style on the album, Jon Pareles of The New York Times noted, "Her voice can be coy and airy, or dive into a torchy near-sob; it can quiver and break or turn punky and self-possessed."
